Chapter 18

The Conspiracy to Overthrow the Dictator

WHILE MOLU WAS MEETING with Senegalese Foreign Minister Fatou-Anne Cerusu at the United Nations, the Dictator was informed of the meeting via the exclusive fax machine across the Atlantic. He summoned his security chief to his library once his molars on the left side of his jaw were no longer grounding. "He's becoming audacious, even arrogant," the Dictator said, sounding like an injured defendant. He handed the fax to Maka M’Gonu.

"Everyone has heard her rants against me. Why is Molu so open about his treachery? What’s gotten into him?”

"I got the same information," M'Gonu replied. "He, like most of our adversaries, underestimates us." That's why he's not being more cautious, and why he's signed his death warrant."

"Death warrant?"

"You know, Mokonzi, his undoing.

"I'm not convinced Molu is careless. Certainly delusional. But I'm not sure about careless," the Dictator said.

"Then it's possible he has a solid offer on the table, is unconcerned about what we know, and is forming alliances for when he makes his move." It could also be a matter of ensuring that his logistics are in order."

“His move? What are you talking about, Maka?”

“It’s clear to me now, Mokonzi. Do you remember that note Sakeseba left on his desk, which the dull-witted secretary discovered and faxed to me a couple of days ago? His meeting with the Cerusu woman confirms what I’ve suspected: he is plotting a coup.”

“A coup? A coup, Maka? Anyone else, I’d say has lost his mind for imagining that Molu could replace me ... He’d need the Americans along with him for that, not just the Tutsis. Americans aren’t quite that ridiculous. We have no intelligence they’re.”

“Well, he met with Garinaldi and Freeman on the same day, within hours, in fact.”

“No! If the Americans were involved, it would not be through these two; they’re just his friends. I wouldn't put my friends in this situation, and the Americans won't either. It's not that, Maka; it's something else! In any case, his fate has been decided. There has been no change."

“I beg your pardon, Mokonzi; we should be prepared in case it's a coup until we know for sure.”

“What do you have in mind, Maka? What are you looking for? ”

“The Cerusu old woman will give us the answer, when she returns to Senegal in a couple of days,” M’Gonu replied. “We have a contact at her ministry that’ll get us the information from the young aide who travels with her. We know she communicates with the Tutsis; we even have recordings of her threats to support them to counter the shipments of arms we used to make to Senegal’s Casamance MFDC rebels. The quickest course of action is still to assassinate Sakeseba in one of Washington's slum alleyways." “NO! He’s more valuable to me now than he was before. Have I not told you that several times? Has this turned into a personal matter, Maka?"

"Of course not, Mokonzi. I propose that he be removed immediately because there are still too many unknowns; too many of his actions are unexplained.
